Q:
A: There are three steps of software releases in general, Alpha, Beta and General. Alpha versions are usually very unstable and are available to designers and employees to work out the bugs. Beta versions are a little less buggy, and a little more stable. They are available to people for testing purposes(sometimes a closed group, but often now to the general public) with the knowledge that they are not guaranteed to be stable or bug free. You should havea good grasp of computer knowlege when using a beta since problems can occur when using them, and while they are not often serious, sometimes it can cause you to need to reformat your computer to remove the program. Once a program has had a thorugh beta testing and is deemed to be stable and bug free, it is released to the general public for everyone to get and this is called a General release. As for Firefox and Opera Betas, they are probably ok to use, but buyer beware(or in this case, beta beware) and know that they might crash often, cause restarts, and generally be unstable. If you do install it, know that while it will probably be ok, having a backup is not a bad thing. I hope that helps.
